Job fair geared toward veterans is scheduled for June 19
By Sally Voth
Veterans looking to return to the civilian workforce are getting a helping hand from those around them.
The Corron Community Development Center at Lord Fairfax Community College will once again host an employment conference geared toward veterans.
The Lord Fairfax Small Business Development Center, the Virginia Employment Commission, Navy Federal Credit Union and business owner/veteran advocate Mike Guevremont are presenting the all-day fair on June 19.
It comes a year after the SBDC's initial such effort, and it's hoped it will become an annual event, said director Bill Sirbaugh.
Among the 12 various sessions at the conference are those on federal jobs, franchising opportunities and advantages to hiring vets for businesses.
Sirbaugh said the SBDC has been asked in the past what's in it for businesses to hire veterans.
"We've got three sessions aimed at giving information to business owners," he said. "We always have veterans coming in, looking how to get started, and in particular, we've had some veterans coming in asking about franchising.
"The focus is definitely on veterans and there are special sessions that will apply just to veterans, but there's going to be information for everybody."
Resume writing for both federal-government jobs and civilian jobs will be covered, too, Sirbaugh said, as will loan requirements and state assistance for vets.
"We've got a pretty mixed agenda," he said.
Last year, about 115-120 people attended the conference, with nearly 100 being veterans, Sirbaugh said. He said it's hoped 120 veterans, and about 150 people overall attend next month.
"This year, we've got a lot of help," Sirbaugh said.
Golden Seal Enterprises Inc. is paying the $25 registration fee for all veterans, he said. Another group is close to lining up free lunch for veterans, too, according to Sirbaugh.
Participants must register in advance. To do so, go to www.LFSBDC.org, or to the center's Facebook or LinkedIn pages, or call (540) 868-7093.
