Board OKs extra land for middle school

Daily staff report

Warren County leaders took action to give a little extra room on the site for a new middle school.

The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved the purchase of 4.7 acres adjacent to land owned by the Economic Development Authority eyed by the county for the Leach Run Parkway and a middle school. The price of the additional land is $300,000. Rutherford Homes LLC currently owns the property.

The board voted on the matter at its regular meeting after meeting in closed session.

County Administrator Douglas Stanley explained Wednesday the additional land helps development of the entire site for the school and the parkway. The EDA property is approximately 25-30 acres, Stanley said.

The design of the school and where it lies on the entire site depends largely on the finalized plans for Leach Run Parkway. Stanley said an engineer's report that compared sites for the school indicated that use of the EDA property would require the county to acquire extra land. The report did not include a cost estimate for the extra property because the price was not known. The additional acres will help with grading and other elements of the school project, and gives the engineers more flexibility in configuring the facility on the site.

County officials and the EDA are still reviewing proposal submitted by firms interested in building Leach Run Parkway.
