Child dies in Winchester house fire
A house fire at 300/302 N. Kent Street in Winchester claimed the life of a child Tuesday afternoon.
Frederick County sheriff's deputies, Winchester police and firefighters tried to rescue the child, but heavy smoke and fire prevented them from entering the building, according to a news release issued by Winchester police.
The child was pronounced dead at Winchester Medical Center. Authorities are withholding the name of the child, pending notification of next of kin.
The fire was first reported to dispatchers at 12:38 p.m., police said.
Firefighters arrived to find fire and heavy smoke escaping from the front of the house, police said.
A woman and another child in the house were also taken to Winchester Medical Center, according to police. Police said the woman was being moved to a burn center.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Police said the house is divided into four apartments, two of which were vacant at the time of the fire.
No emergency crew members were injured.
