The Democratic Party switched candidates for the 33rd House of Delegates District after longtime Republican Del. Joe May lost his re-election bid last week.

Berryville Town Councilwoman Mary L.C. Daniel will seek election to represent the district, the Loudoun County Democratic Party announced in a press release issued Monday.

Daniel, also Frederick County native, replaces Kathleen A. "Kathee" Myers who withdrew her nomination as the party's candidate late last week after May lost the Republican Party primary to newcomer Dave LaRock.

The 33rd House District covers parts of the counties of Clarke, Frederick and Loudoun.

The Democratic Party for the 33rd House District nominated Daniel on Monday and filed the required papers with the State Board of Elections, said Evan MacBeth, chairman of the Loudoun County chapter.

State party officials plan to hold press conferences in several cities Wednesday to announce the slates of candidates for the upcoming election.

The release from the Loudoun County Democratic Party states that Myers decided to withdraw because she could not devote the time necessary to run the campaign and "to ensure that [Democrats] turn [the district] blue."

Daniel stayed out of the race initially because she did not want to run against May, the release indicates. The veteran delegate's defeat opened the way for Daniel to run.

The Democrats' 33rd House District delegate nominating committee picked Myers on June 6, just days before the June 11 primaries. June 11 also was the deadline for parties to file papers for candidates they plan to put on the ballots in the general election.

With Myers' late withdrawal, Virginia code extends the filing deadline to Sept. 26, said Matt Abell, election administration lead with the State Board of Elections.

Daniel graduated from the University of Virginia and T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Virginia, the release states. Daniel worked for more than five years for the Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney in Winchester.

Daniel founded her own law firm in 1998 that she and a partner operate in Winchester. Daniel's husband, William Daniel, works as an administrator for Frederick County Public Schools.
