Front Royal tree work hits next phase
By Alex Bridges
Front Royal plans to move ahead next week on its project to replace trees downtown.
The Department of Environmental Services is holding a public forum on the second phase of the town's Main Street Tree Replacement Program from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday in the visitor's center, located at 414 E. Main St.
Crews will begin replacing pear trees along East Main Street from June 17-19. Interested residents and business owners can attend the forum and learn more about the program and what trees the town plans to plant to replace the pears.
The town took a phased approach to removing trees on Main Street and reduce the impact rather than take them all out at one time, Director Carl Hannigan Jr. said Monday.
Trees along the street are overgrown and the roots continue to damage the concrete sidewalk, Hannigan said. The new trees won't grow as large as the ones currently along the street, Hannigan said.
The second phase involves the removal of three or four trees along Main Street near Chester Street and two at the corner of Crescent, Hannigan explained.
Crews must close parts of the streets as they work to remove and replace trees, Hannigan advised.
"It's going to take a few steps," Hannigan said. "This is more of a major step that's going to impact traffic."
Department crews then will rebuild the concrete tree beds and tree pits to match those located elsewhere along Main Street, Hannigan said.
The department recently completed the first phase of the project that called for the replacement of trees near the Warren County Courthouse and the Daily Grind coffee shop.
Town Horticulture Supervisor Anne Rose will be at the forum to answer questions about the project.
Hannigan said the department plans to keep materials from the forum on display at the visitor's center for the next few days for those interested in the project.
Call the department at 635-7819 for more information.
