Protective order petition against police corporal dismissed

WINCHESTER — A protective order initially sought by the former fiancé of a Middletown police corporal was dismissed Monday in Frederick County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court after she said she was no longer interested in pursuing the matter.
Substitute Judge Ian Williams dismissed the case after Heather Lynn Hedrick told him she was no longer seeking a permanent protective order against Cpl. Daniel Manili.
A temporary protective order had been issued after Hedrick filed a petition accusing Manili of shoving her repeatedly, grabbing her with both hands and throwing her four to six feet when she visited him at his workplace on May 31. The petition sought to have Manili restore utility services to Hedrick’s home at 608 Frontier Fort Lane, Strasburg. Hedrick stated in her petition that Manili moved out of the residence on May 30.
The workplace was at a second job Manili holds in addition to being a member of the Middletown Police Department. Middletown Chief Philip Breeden has said the incident had nothing to do with Manili’s conduct as a member of the police department.
Under questioning from Williams, Hedrick, 29, said she did not love Manili and was not afraid of him.
“The court will accept a request to have this protective order proceeding dismissed and will give each of you a copy of that order,” Williams told Hedrick and Manili.
In a telephone interview after the hearing, Breeden said Manili remains suspended with pay from the police force.
“We haven’t gotten anything from him or the court, and I need something in writing saying it has been in effect dismissed,” Breeden said of the case.
He added that Manili is still facing an assault and battery charge from the same incident that must be resolved before the suspension could be lifted.
“I’m glad this occurred the way it did today,” Breeden said, referring to the protective order dismissal. “Hopefully, the assault and battery charge will turn out the same way.”
