Howard Shockey & Sons, Inc., a general contracting and construction management firm based in Winchester, announced its partnership with Nucor Building Systems in a release Wednesday. Jeff Boehm, Vice President of Howard Shockey & Sons, said the contract initiating the partnership was signed in December 2012.
Nucor supplies pre-engineered metal buildings, which will be used to outfit many of Shockey's future building projects, including its clients in the educational, institutional, healthcare and industrial fields.
"It's one more tool in the toolbox," Boehm said. "It allows us to offer one more type of building construction we had not offered in the past."
Two projects from this expanded toolbox already under way are a truck maintenance facility being built in Front Royal for the Rappahannock Electric Cooperative and an advanced manufacturing facility in Winchester for Southeastern Container, Inc. The planned completion dates are July 1 and Dec. 1, respectively.
"It's pre-engineered, so it can be delivered quickly," Boehm said about the new materials. "And the buildings are also constructed quickly, so we can get people into a facility in a quick fashion that's also energy-efficient."
Energy efficiency is something that's major to both companies. The third largest steel recycler in the U.S., Nucor uses an average of more than 80 percent of recycled steel in its products.
"We're members of the U.S. Green Building Council," Boehm said. "We do both LEED-certified buildings and buildings that utilize a number of energy-efficient components. It seems to be more and more important to more and more different types of clients."
