Reactions mixed over new donut bacon creation

Once every few years, a sandwich is crafted that is so ingenious, yet obvious, that it makes fast food historians scratch their heads and wonder, “Why hasn’t this been made before?”

In 2006, it was Burger King’s four-pattied behemoth known as the Quad Stacker. In 2010, KFC upped the ante with its chicken-fillets-as-buns Double Down sandwich.

And starting June 7 in Dunkin’ Donuts stores nationwide — Strasburg, Woodstock and Front Royal franchises began selling them Monday — the Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich will join the two blood pressure busters in the collective menu-ordering subconscious.

Assembled from fried eggs and bacon strips stuck in the middle of a bisected glazed donut, the looks alone will get your heart racing. But fear not, the damage looks worse than it really is.

The difference with the Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich is that it’s only 360 calories. Compared to the average Chipotle burrito (1,000 cal.) or a Starbucks Mint Chocolatey Chip Frappuccino (680 cal.), it’s like a walk in the park, literally.

If the whole “let’s use donuts instead of buns” move sounds familiar, that’s because this sandwich practically evolved from Paula Deen’s Lady’s Brunch Burger, which is made from glazed donuts, a burger, a fried egg and bacon and which she describes as “only one serving per lifetime.”

The new sandwich hasn’t exactly received the warmest welcome, though. The Woodstock and two Front Royal stores said they haven’t received any orders from customers for it. Amber Sloat, manager of the Dunkin’ Donuts location in Strasburg, said there’s only been five bacon-egg-donuts sold at her store.

“So far, the word’s not really out,” Sloat said. “I don’t even know if we have it advertised, but I hear it’s pretty popular up north.”

The Dunkin’ Donuts, which was added to King Street when Handy Mart was remodeled in December, was getting a steady stream of afternoon customers, but none who seemed to want to brave the new culinary experiment.

Buying a bag of coffee beans and a frozen latte, Kathy Manuel said she didn’t think the sandwich sounded appealing. “If I want my donut, I’ll get my donut,” she said. “If I want an egg, I’ll get an egg.”

Dawn Miller, assistant store manager of the Handy Mart, said she had seen the new sandwich announced on the Today Show on Monday morning. She said she was surprised by its low-calorie count. Her niece, Alexis Poe, thought the combination sounded like a pretty good idea.

The sweeter younger sister of the Egg McMuffin — and one that will get your fingers considerably stickier — the Glazed Donut Bacon Sandwich sells for $3.29.
