Local men charged

Complaint says pair sold heroin

By Joe Beck

Two Edinburg men are in Shenandoah County jail on drug-related charges stemming from a large-scale law enforcement operation in late May and early June.

Columbus "Pete" Butler, 57, of 108 Wesley Chapel Drive, and Charles William Smith Jr., 45, of 54 Jewell Lane, are accused of selling heroin.

A criminal complaint filed against Smith accuses him of selling three packets of heroin on June 10 to a confidential law enforcement informant. The alleged transaction was completed at Smith's home, according to the criminal complaint filed by Sgt. Brent D. Lutz of the Shenandoah County Sheriff's Office.

A criminal complaint filed against Butler also accuses him of selling heroin to a confidential law enforcement informant. The complaint states that the heroin was sold on May 29 at or near Butler's home.

A law enforcement officer from Warren County witnessed the alleged transaction in a parking area around Butler's home, according to the complaint. The complaint states that the law enforcement officer provided transportation to and from the site where Butler is accused of selling the heroin.

An official with the Shenandoah County Sheriff's Office said the arrests and subsequent search warrants issued were linked to the arrest of Ronnie Maurice Jones, 36, of Front Royal, last week in Warren County. Jones is facing charges of manufacturing a controlled substance, possession of a gun by a convicted felon, and possession of ammunition by a convicted felon. Authorities accuse Jones of selling heroin.

"The search warrant from this arrest was connected to the arrest over in Warren County," Shenandoah County Lt. Wesley Dellinger said, referring to the Jones arrest.
