Man charged with brandishing a firearm

By Joe Beck

Front Royal police arrested a local man Friday afternoon and charged him with two counts of brandishing a firearm after an encounter with two females at the Relax Inn Motel at 1525 N. Shenandoah Ave.

The defendant, Gilbert "Gibby" Baltimore, 26, of 408 Hill St., was returned to the jail and remained held without bond after a hearing Tuesday in Warren County General District Court. Judge W. Dale Houff scheduled another hearing for 2:45 p.m. on Aug. 27.

Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Anna Hammond argued against relaxing Baltimore's bail status.

"He can't keep himself out of trouble," Hammond told Houff.

In a news release issued Monday, Police Chief Norman Shiflett said police arrived at the motel in response to a report of a man displaying a gun.

One of the complainants identified the suspect as Baltimore. She told police that Baltimore had brandished a gun and looked at her in a "menacing" way during their encounter.

Shiflett said police also learned that Baltimore had made an "indecent" comment to the woman and that he was angered by her response.

Sheriff's deputies and agents from the Northwestern Region Drug Task Force found Baltimore walking in the area of the 700 block of North Royal Avenue a short while later, Shiflett said.

Police found no gun on him, and Baltimore denied having a gun with him, Shiflett said. But law enforcement officials later found an object near the motel that turned out to be a BB gun that closely resembles a handgun commonly used by police, Shiflett said.

Police are asking anyone with additional information about the incident to contact them at 635-2111.
