Man charged with brandishing a machete near school

By Joe Beck

A Front Royal man has been charged with brandishing a machete with intent to intimidate within 1,000 feet of school property following an incident Friday night.

Timothy Emanuel Jones, 27, of 1208 Massanutten Ave., appeared in General District Court on Monday and was ordered held without bond in the Warren County Jail.

Police arrested Jones Saturday after fielding a complaint on Friday of a man brandishing a machete at the Royal Arms apartment complex on East Criser Road. In a criminal complaint, Front Royal officer Michael Gallagher stated that he arrived at the complex and spoke with a woman identified as Jones's aunt, Irvinna Basnight.

Gallagher said Basnight told him that Jones drove his Chevrolet sport utility vehicle into the complex at a high speed and then parked in front of one of the buildings.

"He then exited the vehicle brandishing a machete," Gallagher wrote.

Basnight told Gallagher that Jones was looking for her son in the aftermath of a disagreement between them, according to the complaint. Basnight said her brother left with Jones in the defendant's SUV and "tried to calm him down," the complaint states. Another witness also gave a statement that Jones had left the SUV carrying a machete, the complaint states.

The complaint states that another officer later stopped Jones's SUV and found a machete with the defendant.

The location of the apartment complex -- across the street from Ressie Jeffries Elementary School and within 1,000 feet of the building -- led Gallagher to seek a charge of brandishing a machete with intent to intimidate on school property, the complaint states.
