Man charged with malicious wounding after beating incident
By Joe Beck
Strasburg police have charged a Middletown man with malicious wounding and violation of a protective order after investigating a report of a fight in the 1600 block of Pendleton Lane.
Police said they arrived at the scene last Wednesday to find the defendant, Derrick Dwayne Dehaney, 22, of 7683 Main St., Middletown, attempting to leave. The victim, Kevin Anderson, 48 was lying on the ground suffering from a broken ankle and cuts, bruises and scrapes inflicted by Dehaney, according to police.
Anderson was taken to Shenandoah Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released, police said.
Chief Tim Sutherly said in an interview that the fight broke out when Anderson tried to stop Dehaney from entering the house.
Sutherly said a protective order banned Dehaney from appearing on the property at Pendleton Lane occupied by Anderson and his daughter, Jada. But Jada Anderson, who is the mother of Dehaney's 2-year-old child, had given him a key to the door of her home and permission to enter, Sutherly said.
Sutherly described a mismatch in size between Anderson and Dehaney. Anderson is 5 feet 5 inches tall and 135 pounds while Dehaney is 6 feet 2 inches and 235 pounds, Sutherly said.
"According to neighbors, he was beaten and picked up and slammed on the ground multiple times," Sutherly said of Anderson.
Jada Anderson also was charged with violating terms of the protective order for giving Dehaney a key to the home, Sutherly said.
Dehaney appeared in Shenandoah County General District Court on Monday. He is still being held in the Shenandoah County Jail on a $20,000 secure bond. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Sept. 9.
