Man who drowned in Shenandoah River is identified

The man who drowned in the Shenandoah River in Front Royal on Friday has been identified as 60-year-old Charles Stanfield, according to a news release issued Monday by the Warren County Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a possible drowning at about 4:35 p.m. Friday in the area of 1006 Benny's Beach Road, Front Royal. The release states that Stanfield's body was found downstream from where he was swimming. He was pronounced dead at around 5 p.m.

A preliminary autopsy report indicates drowning was the cause of death, the release states.
