To commemorate Front Royal and Warren County's 225th anniversary this year, the Northern Virginia Daily is working with the Warren Heritage Society to publish a pictorial history book through Pediment Publishing.

The book will be available for purchase later this year, said Pediment Publishing sales consultant Brian Lupton.

While visiting the Northern Shenandoah Valley this week from his home in Eugene, Ore., Lupton said the heirloom-quality hardcover community coffee table book will feature photographs from the community. Three photo scanning sessions this week -- today, Friday and Saturday -- will allow residents the opportunity to submit favorites from their family's past.

"This is a nice way to get the public involved, and kind of reach out to them, let them bring their own photos in," Lupton said.

"[Each contributing resident] will at least get one photograph in the pictorial book."

The older the photos the better, Lupton said. The black and white book will span from the early 1800s to 1939, with later dates possibly making up a second volume later. He said he hopes to receive about 250 to 300 photos during the three photo scanning sessions.

The book will be broken up by categories, like education, recreation, commerce, industry, people and street views. But the book will be what the community makes it, he said.

From helping put together books from other communities around the country, Lupton said he has an idea what the book might look like, but since every town is different, the book will be what the community makes it.

"Most of the time [what he sees] is old family members, ... which is fine because obviously there's going to be a chapter of people in Front Royal," he said. But pictures of schools, old sports teams, organizations, clubs, civic clubs and storefronts will better fill out the story of Front Royal and Warren County.

"It's fun," Lupton said. "It's almost like putting together a mystery, and you just learn so much about the towns."

Submission guidelines are at Pediment's website, warrenco.pictorialbook.com, including downloadable forms, and Lupton stressed as much information about the photos as possible is needed. Forms are also available at The Northern Virginia Daily office, 152 N. Holliday St., Strasburg.

Photo scanning sessions will be from 1 to 4 p.m. today at the Warren Heritage Society, 101 Chester St., Front Royal; from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday at Samuels Public Library, 330 E. Criser St., Front Royal; and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Heritage Society.
