Strasburg man arrested, charged in domestic dispute

By Joe Beck

Strasburg police arrested a town resident and charged him with assault and battery after they responded to the scene of a domestic dispute Friday morning.

The report of a disturbance came in at 11:15 a.m. Police said they were dispatched to 202 Brown St. where they arrested Nicholas Ritter, 18, of the same address.

Maj. Jerome Robinson of the Strasburg Police Department said witnesses reported that Ritter grabbed Debra Shaw in the "head area" and threw her off the porch of the house from a height of two or three feet.

Robinson said Shaw is the grandmother of Ritter's 17-year-old girlfriend.

Robinson said police are sorting through unconfirmed and conflicting reports that Ritter was in possession of a knife at some point during the altercation. Robinson said Ritter suffered a slight puncture wound and abrasion to his hand. The defendant was treated at the scene by fire and rescue personnel and did not require hospitalization, Robinson said.

Robinson said an emergency protective order was issued ordering Ritter to "stay away from that property and the resident at that address."

The defendant remained in the Shenandoah County Jail as of mid-afternoon after bail was set at $1,000 secured bond, Robinson said. Ritter is scheduled to appear at 9 a.m. on July 25 in Shenandoah County General District Court.

Robinson said the investigation is continuing into what role, if any, the knife may have played in the incident.

"We had so many conflicting stories between witnesses about how it happened," Robinson said of the confrontation between Ritter and Shaw. "He may have been cleaning the knife. There are no additional charges, but they are pending upon further investigation with the knife wound."
