Thefts, burglaries hit southern Shenandoah County

By Joe Beck

Shenandoah County authorities are looking for one or more individuals involved in a wave of attempted burglaries and thefts from rural residences across the southern part of the county since late June.

Maj. Scott Proctor said the half dozen or so incidents have been reported in the areas of Belgravia Road near Mount Jackson, Orkney Grade Road, also near Mount Jackson and Ridge Road, New Market Road and Senedo Road around New Market and Quicksburg.

"We don't know if they're connected, but we have no information saying they're not," Proctor said of thefts.

Proctor said the items stolen from homes and outbuildings include mostly hand tools and yard and garden equipment such as chainsaws, generators and trimmers. Prescription drugs were taken in one burglary, he said.

Most or all of the items were stolen during daylight hours, Proctor said. The first incident was reported on June 30 and the most recent on July 19.

The sheriff's office is urging people to lock their doors and windows and take the time to record serial numbers on items that could be targets of thieves.

Detailed descriptions of suspicious persons and license plate numbers of vehicles that may have been used in a crime are also valuable, Proctor said.

Anyone with information about the thefts and attempted burglaries is asked to call the sheriff's office at 459-6100.
