Woodstock man accused of sexual battery against child

A Woodstock man appeared Wednesday in Shenandoah County Circuit Court for a bail hearing after he was arrested last week and charged with aggravated sexual battery in a case involving a 7-year-old girl.

The defendant, Mikhail Osterfeld, 37, of Woodstock, remained in jail without bond after the hearing. Judge Dennis L. Hupp said he needed more information about Osterfeld's prior criminal record before deciding on a request from defense attorney John Holloran that his client be released from jail on a secured bond.

Woodstock police investigator Scott Thompson testified that two girls, ages 5 and 7, identified as victims or possible victims, were interviewed at the Child Advocacy Center in Winchester in connection with accusations against Osterfeld. Thompson told Hupp that two other children, ages 4 and 10, were also interviewed as part of a continuing investigation.

"I feel it's safe to say no further charges with regard to the 4-year-old and 10-year-old are to come," Thompson told Hupp.

Police Chief Eric Reiley said in an interview Wednesday that more charges could be filed as the investigation unfolds. The sole charge against Osterfeld involves the 7-year-old girl, Reiley said.

Reiley said Osterfeld was arrested without incident at the Woodstock police station on July 10 after he agreed to come in for questioning.

Holloran told Hupp that his client was determined to fight the charge against him and would be a good candidate for bail on a secured bond.

Holloran said Osterfeld is an independent defense contractor and former military officer working in Afghanistan. Osterfeld was completing one month of leave and had been scheduled to return to Afghanistan on Saturday, Holloran said.

Holloran said it will be impossible for Osterfeld to leave the country while he is facing the felony charge.
