Numerous events set for Civil War Weekend

Living history demonstrations, tours, lectures, book signings and a screening of "Gone with the Wind" are some of the Civil War-themed events held in Winchester, Frederick County and Clarke County this weekend as part of its "1863 in the Valley" program.

The weekend starts off at 7 p.m. Friday with a car caravan tour and program about the deaths of Stephen Ramseur and Charles Lowell, two young soldiers who fought at Cedar Creek. Visitors are asked to meet park ranger Shannon Moeck at the main Belle Grove parking lot, 336 Belle Grove Road, Middletown.

Beginning at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Belle Grove will host 30-minute programs about the history of the valley, the Battle of Cedar Creek and the impact of the war. Rangers will lead visitors on tours through the Cedar Creek Battlefield at 2 p.m. and Middletown at 5 p.m.

Then at 1 p.m. on Sunday, a Cedar Creek park ranger will share the story of the 8th Vermont regiment, which sacrificed itself against a Confederate force four times its size, and the monument that now memorializes them. Visitors are asked to meet at the National Park Service Visitor Contact Station, 7712 Main St., Middletown.

Cavalry demonstration

Reenactors will portray Civil War cavalry during demonstrations at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday.

Lectures on Civil War medicine
Where: Old Court House Civil War Museum, 20 North Loudoun St., Winchester

Dr. Yusuf Saleeby will speak about Dr. Hunter Holmes McGuire, the surgeon of General Stonewall Jackson, at 10 a.m., and the advances in medicine and surgery during the Civil War at 2 p.m.

Civil War tours at Belle Grove

David T. Booz, professor of Civil War Era Studies at Gettysburg College, will discuss the the Gettysburg campaign at 11 a.m.. Jonathan A. Noyalas, assistant professor of history and director of the Center for Civil War History at Lord Fairfax Community College, will discuss emancipation in Stephens City 2 p.m.. Noyalas will sign his book, "Two Peoples, One Community: The African American Experience in Newtown (Stephens City), Virginia, 1850-1870," at 3 p.m.

Kernstown Battlefield tours
Where: Kernstown Battlefield on the Pritchard-Grim Farm, 610 Battle Park Drive, Winchester

After the Third Battle of Winchester in 1864, Gen. Philip Sheridan's Union medical forces constructed a 500-tent hospital, the largest temporary field hospital during the war. Dr. Jonathan O'Neal from the Society of Civil War Surgeons will lead tours of the hospital site.

Camp Johnson reenactment

The Glen Burnie House might be closed until 2014 for renovations, but visitors are invited to join the reenactors portraying some of the 4,000 soldiers who camped out on its property during the war.

"Gone with the Wind" screening

The film classic, which nabbed eight Oscars for its portrayal of Southern life during the Civil War, will be shown in the outdoor amphitheater.
