A Shenandoah County jail inmate was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center with a serious eye injury Aug. 3 after another inmate attacked him.

Authorities charged Adam Tyler Milgram, 21, of 2552 Cave Ridge Road, Mount Jackson, with aggravated malicious wounding after the fight.

The victim, Luis Rivera, 45, was sitting on a cellblock on a bench in the jail when Milgram came along and began punching him in the face, according to a criminal complaint filed in Shenandoah County General District Court.

The complaint states that Milgram landed at least two blows before Rivera was able to block the punches.

Rivera was taken to a hospital emergency room where a doctor stated the victim could lose sight in one eye injured in the attack, according to the complaint. Rivera was then sent to the trauma center at the UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville, the complaint states.

“There’s no indication of what started it,” Capt. Wesley Dellinger of the Sheriff’s Office said of the fight. Dellinger stated that Rivera also sustained facial cuts in the attack.

Dellinger said Rivera was back in the jail as of Wednesday.

Milgram remains in jail. His next court appearance is scheduled for 11 a.m. Aug. 23 in Shenandoah County General District Court.

Online court records show Milgram also has appearances scheduled on Aug. 28 in circuit court where he faces charges of illegal drug resales, burglary, grand larceny and vandalism.
