Northeast Strasburg recyclers win pool party

Daily staff report

Residents in northeast Strasburg won a free pool party at the town pool on Monday by recycling the most material over the past fiscal year.

Town Manager Judson Rex announced the winner of Strasburg's recycling competition in a press release. Residents in Route 2 recycled 107.93 tons of material while Route 1 recycled 96.17 tons in fiscal 2013. Route 2 covers the northeast part of town. Route 1 covers the area south of King Street and Massanutten Street.

Residents recycled a total of 204.1 tons of material, diverted this waste from the landfill and saved Strasburg more than $7,300 in tipping fees. The town pays $36 per ton to dump trash at the landfill.

During fiscal 2012 the town collected 179.43 tons, meaning collection increased this past year by almost 14 percent. Route 1 showed a greater increase in participation than Route 2 compared to the previous yea, according to the release.

Strasburg had set a goal of collecting 400 tons of material this year.
