Tennessee man charged after roadside fight with state police
By Joe Beck
A man arrested after a struggle with state police on Interstate 66 on Thursday faces a charge of assaulting a law enforcement officer and three related charges after being released from jail on a $6,000 secured bond.
Authorities accuse Bradley Laurence Shelton, 25, of Sevierville, Tenn., of starting a fight with state trooper Terry L. Hilliker after he stopped to help Shelton with a disabled 2005 Toyota at about 7:45 a.m. at the two-mile marker on eastbound I-66.
A criminal complaint filed by Hilliker in Warren County General District Court states that Shelton said his car had run out of gas. Hilliker wrote that he told Shelton he would contact the state Division of Motor Vehicles to help him obtain some gas.
Hilliker had returned to his car to radio for roadside assistance when he noticed Shelton starting to leave the scene on foot, according to the complaint. Shelton walked about 150 meters westbound while Hilliker warned him "numerous" times that it was unsafe and illegal to walk along an interstate highway, the complaint states.
After another trooper arrived at the scene, Hilliker asked Shelton to return to the Toyota.
"Shelton was advised that he was then being placed under arrest and told to place his hands behind his back," Hilliker wrote. "Shelton continued to be uncooperative and resisted the arrest by pulling away and pushing me to the ground."
Hilliker wrote that the struggle with Shelton lasted several minutes before both troopers managed to handcuff him.
State police said Hilliker and Shelton were later treated for minor cuts and bruises at Warren Memorial Hospital.
The charges against Shelton include resisting arrest, unauthorized use of a controlled highway and public drunkenness.
Court documents list Shelton as 5 feet 6 inches tall and 175 pounds. His next court appearance is scheduled for 1:45 p. m. in General District Court.
