Third person arrested in Gail Smith murder case

Daily staff report

Berryville police Monday arrested a Burkeville woman on charges stemming from the July 2009 murder of Gail Smith, the third person to be arrested in the case.

Deborah Smith, 61, was arrested after she was indicted for murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Smith’s arrest came on the same day that one of the earlier defendants in the case pleaded guilty in Clarke County Circuit Court to first degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder and shooting or stabbing in commission of a felony. The defendant, Tony M. Sharpe, 26, of Clarksville, is scheduled to appear at a sentencing hearing on Dec. 16.

Police said in a news release Smith was arrested at her home by law enforcement officers with the Prince Edwards County Sheriff’s Office, Berryville Police Department and Clarke County Sheriff’s Office.

Smith’s arrest follows those of Sharpe and Timothy Smith Jr., 53 of Burkeville, both of whom were jailed in March on murder charges.

Gail Smith, a former member of the Berryville Town Council, was found dead in her home from a shotgun wound in July 2009.
