Sweet Frog to open shop in Woodstock

By Ryan Cornell

It was only a matter of time before Woodstock caved into the demands of its frozen yogurt-crazed residents.

By the time December rolls around and pumpkin spice lattes return as a popular winter accessory, a new Sweet Frog location will have opened on West Reservoir Road in between Paisano's and nTelos.

Andrew Ulrich, who will own the frozen yogurt franchise with his parents Doug and Rhonda Ulrich, said the property became available about a month and a half ago, but he's wanted to open a store in Woodstock for a while.

The Ulrichs owns five Sweet Frog locations in Winchester; Martinsburg, W.Va.; Charles Town, W.Va.; Johnstown, Pa., and Hagerstown, Md., and are partners in the franchise in Morgantown, W.Va.

"A lot of people from Woodstock were coming into our Winchester store and asking us if we could open up a Sweet Frog in Woodstock," Andrew Ulrich said.

He said construction should start in the next few weeks on the store, which will have six machines and can dispense 14 different flavors at one time.

Hiring will start sometime in October on two dates that people can show up and interview on the spot, he said. The store will be looking to fill about 10 to 12 jobs and are hiring people ages 16 and older. The jobs mostly will be part-time positions, but they also will be hiring a manager and an assistant manager.

Ulrich said he's relied on Facebook for marketing and the reaction has been overwhelmingly positive.

"When we put up our new page, we immediately got 800 likes," he said. "The word is spreading very quickly."

That amount is now up to 1,396 likes and the page is receiving multiple comments from fans per day.

Kai Gingerich wrote on the Facebook page: "This is going to make Woodstock people twice as fat as we were before."

Summer Mantz Ruhling wrote, "Oh goodness, my kids are going to drive me crazy all the time to go."

Ulrich said he believes it's the first frozen yogurt store in the city and will benefit from all of the traffic from surrounding communities.

"Woodstock is the gathering point for smaller areas in Shenandoah County," he said. "If you live in Mount Jackson or Edinburg, you're going to go to Woodstock to do all of your shopping."

Sweet Frog started in 2009 with its first location in Richmond and has nearly 300 stores today.
