$2,000 worth of copper stolen from Holtzman Propane

By Ryan Cornell

The Shenandoah County Sheriff's Office is searching for suspects who might have stolen more than $2,000 worth of copper tubing from Holtzman Propane in Strasburg.

The copper tubing, used for gas lines and wound in rolls, was taken from the back of seven service trucks in a secure area attached to the propane business, Maj. Scott Proctor said.

He said the perpetrator, though it's unknown whether there was more than one, forced entry into the lot on Borden Mowery Drive the night of Aug. 27.

The Sheriff's Office received the report from an employee of Holtzman Propane at about 7 a.m. the following morning, he said.

"Copper has been a target of opportunity for these thieves because of its relationship to scrap value," Proctor said.

He said copper piping is often stolen from homes that are either abandoned or are in the process of being renovated due to foreclosure. Copper prices have risen in the past few years and larcenies such as this one have become a nationwide problem.

"Law enforcement agencies everywhere are experiencing the same things we are," he said.

Anyone with information about this incident should contact the Sheriff's Office at 540-459-6100.
