Dispute ends in pepper spray

By Ryan Cornell

A dispute between a Strasburg woman and her former husband ended with her pepper-spraying him and their 12-year-old son, according to Strasburg Police Chief Tim Sutherly.

Sutherly said the incident happened at a townhouse in the 600 block of Pendleton Lane in Strasburg at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday. He said the two adults were arguing when she proceeded to spray him and inadvertently sprayed their son's eyes.

Sutherly said the man left the scene and attempted to get a warrant at the Warren County Magistrate's Office.

Sutherly said pepper spray-related cases like these are rarely reported, though he knows many people carry them for self-defense.

"It's legal to carry," he said. "You just have to be justified in using it."

He said people who get sprayed should flush their eyes with clean cool water and wait for it to dissipate. He said there are also wipes available that can help cure the irritation.

He said people can buy protective pouches and flip lids so they don't accidentally set them off.

"It's just like you're carrying a firearm," he said. "You have to make sure you're properly trained to use it."
