Gore firefighter among honored

Four Virginia firefighter who died in the line of duty will be honored at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service on Oct. 6.
The firefighters from Virginia being honored, among 69 other firefighters who died in 2012, are:
Gore Volunteer Fire and Rescue firefighter Zachary T. Whitacre, 21, who died from injuries sustained in an apparatus accident while en route to the tanker fill site during a residential structure fire on Feb. 13, 2012.
Bloxom Volunteer Fire Company Lt. David R. Chew Jr., 30, who died from injuries he sustained in an apparatus accident while responding to a motor vehicle accident on July 16, 2012.
Boones Mill Volunteer Fire Department Lt. John Lennox Echternach Jr., 54, who died on July 2, 2012, after being struck by a falling tree while helping a stranded motorist during a storm.
Norfolk Fire-Rescue firefighter Jonathan D. Myers, 54, who died after physical fitness training on March 19, 2012.
The 32 annual memorial service will be held at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Md.
