Police continue investigation into 30-year-old murder

Daily staff report

Front Royal police Sgt. Dennis Smedley is the town's only officer killed in the line-of-duty. He was killed on Sept. 20, 1983, and the case remains open.

Virginia State Police noted the 30th anniversary of Smedley's death in a news release on Thursday, and Special Agent J.A. DeFilippi of the state police Bureau of Criminal Investigation is asking for the public's help in solving the case.

"We know someone in the Front Royal community can help us identify this individual, ultimately bringing closure to the Smedley family after 30 long years of suffering," DeFilippi stated in the release. "We hope anyone with information about this case who may have been reluctant to come forward in the past will come forward now and tell us what they know."

Smedley, 28 at the time, was getting into his vehicle when he was approached from behind and shot several times. Two people at separate times were charged in his murder, but both were acquitted.

Anyone with information should contact DeFilippi at 540-829-7400 or 1-888-300-015, or by email at bci.culpeper@vsp.virginia.gov.
