A Strasburg man is facing charges of assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest after an encounter with town police Tuesday in the area of North Place and East Washington Street.

Police Chief Tim Sutherly said the officers, Jason Clark and Matt Troxell, were investigating a report of someone trying to cash a forged check in the name of Fox's Pizza for $420 and identified Jeremy McWilliams, 29, of 225 S. Charles St., as a suspect.

The police had obtained arrest warrants for forgery, uttering and obtaining money under false pretenses when they spotted McWilliams walking down the street around 1:50 p.m., Sutherly said in an interview Friday.

McWilliams ran from them, but was quickly caught by Clark and Troxell, Sutherly said. McWilliams then began resisting and assaulting Clark and Troxell, Sutherly said.

"It just consisted of him pushing off during the course of the resistance," Sutherly said of McWilliams' actions. No punches, weapons or distracting objects were involved, he added.

Sutherly said McWilliams has no connection with Fox Pizza.

"We assume he stole the check and that's being investigated," Sutherly said.

McWilliams appeared Friday in Shenandoah County General District Court where his bail was set at $5,000 secured bond. He was still in jail Friday afternoon awaiting his next scheduled court appearance at 9 a.m. Oct. 28 in general district court.

The charges against McWilliams include petty larceny, two forgery-related counts and pick pocketing less than $5.
