Police: Arrest imminent in Middletown burglaries

By Ryan Cornell

A Frederick County man is the primary suspect in a string of burglaries at two Middletown businesses a little more than a week ago.

Middletown Police Chief Philip Breeden said the man is suspected of breaking into the Wayside Inn twice and The Irish Isle restaurant once in the span of three to four nights. He said money was taken from the cash drawers of both businesses and "several bottles of alcohol" were stolen from the restaurant's bar.

The suspect's third and final burglary was foiled after an owner of the Wayside Inn spotted him attempting to steal a safe.

"The owner heard noises and came down and apprehended him as he was taking the safe out to the parking lot," Breeden said. "He dropped the safe and took off running."

The police chief said a K-9 unit was used to track the man, but eventually lost his location.

An arrest is imminent, Breeden said, once the results of a fingerprint and DNA test are received from a state forensics lab in Manassas.

"Here in Middletown, we have our share of crimes. However, being a small community, we don't have it in the same number as Woodstock or Strasburg or Winchester city," he said. "Three [burglaries] in a couple days is a little abnormal for us."

Breeden said nobody else is believed to be involved in the burglaries. Anyone with information concerning the crimes is asked to contact Detective Mike Tennett at 540-868-0535.
