Woman faces murder charge

Daily staff report

A Middleburg woman now faces murder and arson charges in a June 18 fire that resulted in the death of a 2-year-old boy.

Sherry Cruz, 34, was indicted by a Winchester grand jury Tuesday on a charge of first-degree murder in the death of Christian Cruz. The fire occurred at 300 North Kent St. in Winchester, according to a press release from Winchester police.

Winchester police and the city's Fire Marshal's Office determined the fire started in the home's living room.

Cruz, who was the only adult home at the time of the fire, was arrested Sept. 6 and charged with four counts of felony child neglect relating to the fire.

Cruz is incarcerated at the Northwestern Regional Adult Detention Center.
