Authorities make arrest in Subway break-in

A Front Royal man has been charged with felony breaking and entering, felony grand larceny and misdemeanor destruction of property following a theft from the Subway restaurant on North Royal Avenue in Front Royal.
Former Subway employee Randall Scott Hillriegel, 27, is accused of entering the business during the early morning hours on Monday and stealing a cash box containing an undisclosed amount of money and gift cards, according to Sgt. Jason Ryman of the Front Royal Police Department.
He said the gift cards would have to be activated in the store and contain no value.
A current employee who arrived to bake bread at about 2:50 a.m. on Monday noticed that a side door had been broken into.
“The damage to the building was sustained to the door,” Ryman said. “It was a wooden door that had been forced open.”
The employee immediately flagged down Warren County deputies in the area, who cleared the building and waited for the police department and Criminal Investigations Division to arrive at the scene.
Police determined that Hillriegel was a suspect and located him nearby to question him about the burglary. Ryman said Hillriegel denied involvement in an initial interview and eventually confessed to breaking into the eatery after being interviewed a second time.
Hellriegel also confessed to breaking the window at the B&L Kustard stand, located on the same lot as Subway. A window was broken at the ice cream shop, but entry was not made.
Ryman, noting that the security cameras at Subway weren’t recording, said he wants to emphasize the importance of using security systems.
“Business owners need to make sure that their security equipment is operating,” he said. “It expedites concluding the investigation that much faster.”
Hillriegel is being held at the Warren County Jail on a $5,000 secured bond.
