Carmeuse to lead plant tours Saturday

By Ryan Cornell

Carmeuse Lime and Stone, a producer of lime, high calcium limestone and dolomitic stone with a location in Strasburg, is inviting the public to take tours of its plant and quarry at an open house on Saturday. The event will be held at 1696 Oranda Road in Strasburg from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free food and drinks will be provided.

Human Resources Administrator Lin Farrell said this is the first time an event like this has been offered at the plant, which has been operating in Strasburg for five years.

"It's something a lot of Carmeuse plants are doing across the country," she said. "It's to show community spirit. Many of them are having all types of open houses."

Jim Bottom, area operations manager, said it's a chance for local residents not only to see the process that goes into making the final product, but also to better understand the workings of the plant.

"Opening our doors will hopefully let people understand what goes on here," he said.
"Sometimes you drive past a business and you wonder what goes on behind those walls. This is an opportunity for them to meet us and for us to meet them."

Although Carmeuse only has been operating at the site near the Cedar Creek battlefield since 2008, he said mining activity there stretches back to the 1880s.
