Driver killed after pickup runs into tractor trailer

By Ryan Cornell

A West Virginia man died in a motor vehicle crash on Interstate 81 at about 2:50 p.m. Wednesday.

State police Sgt. F.L. (Les) Tyler said the crash involved two vehicles on I-81 southbound about a half-mile south of the Stephens City exit.

"The first vehicle was a Kenworth tractor trailer pulling a flatbed trailer loaded with heavy equipment," he said. "That vehicle had pulled over to the right shoulder of 81 southbound."

He said the tractor trailer was operated by Gregory Lee Ousley, 52, of Huesville, Ky.

Tyler said Bruce Allen Hatfield, 37, of Beckley, W.Va., was driving the second vehicle, a 2008 Ford pickup truck.

"The Ford pickup went off on the right shoulder of the road and ran into the rear of the tractor trailer," Tyler said.

He said Hatfield, who was wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. Tyler said Ousley was issued a summons for improperly stopping on a highway.
