After a four-hour standoff with police in Texas, a fugitive from Front Royal has been captured.

David Daryll Robert Thurber, 42, was arrested on Friday in Rockwall, Texas, and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, evading law enforcement and unlawful use of a vehicle, according to Detective Crystal Cline of the Front Royal Police Department.

She said Thurber has pending charges in Front Royal, Florida and Arkansas.

Thurber had been charged on Sept. 13 with felony grand larceny when he was accused of stealing a safe containing a "substantial amount of cash and valuable coins" from a Front Royal residence, Cline said. She said the safe and some of its contents were recovered, but the cash was not.

Detectives from the Front Royal Police Department tracked the fugitive to St. Petersburg, Fla., and Memphis, Tenn., where the trail went cold until they were contacted by the Rockwall Police Department.

"They [Rockwall police] thought it was suspicious to have someone with Florida tags driving through town," Cline said. "They called it into dispatch and it was reported stolen."

Thurber refused to pull over and led police on a 10- to 15-minute pursuit late Thursday night, Cline said. The chase came to an end when he drove over spike strips and barricaded himself inside the vehicle with two stolen firearms. Cline said the man eventually surrendered to a negotiator four hours later.

Thurber is being held in a city jail in Rockwall, which is a suburb of Dallas.

Cline said she thinks Thurber will be tried on his charges in Texas and then extradited to Florida to be tried.

"Since we have the lowest charges pending, it's most likely we'll get him last," she said.
