Daily Staff Report

A North Carolina man was arrested on Saturday when he allegedly fired a gun within Front Royal town limits, according to a news release authorized on Monday by Front Royal Police Chief Norman Shiflett.

Mark Twain Patrick II, 27, of North Carolina, was charged with discharging a firearm in town limits, reckless handling of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, trespassing and possession of a schedule II narcotic.

The release states that Officer Kevin Orndorff was dispatched to the property of the Veterans of Foreign Affairs on North Royal Avenue at 3:45 p.m. Saturday after receiving reports of a gun being fired in the area.

The police officer made contact with Patrick, who "advised him that he had just purchased a Ruger .22-caliber rifle with a scope and was attempting to zero in using a log as his target," according to the release.

"Orndorff advised Patrick that he was on private property and that it was illegal to shoot a firearm within town limits," states the release. "Officer Orndorff observed three fishing boats on the Shenandoah River, several individuals fishing on the banks and Poe's Campground and the VFW were in view."

Further investigation revealed that Patrick was convicted of a felony offense in North Carolina.

The release states that Patrick was held without bond with a scheduled court date of Nov. 26. It states further that the Ruger .22-caliber rifle, three 25-round magazines and miscellaneous .22-caliber ammunition were seized upon his arrest.

Anyone with further information about the incident is asked to contact Officer Kevin Orndorff at 540-635-2111 or korndorff@frontroyalva.com
