Pursuit ends with an arrest
By Joe Beck
Front Royal police arrested a McAllen, Texas man after a vehicle chase early Saturday morning.
Edgar Eluid Rodriguez, 23, faces charges of drunk driving, refusal to take a breath test and felony eluding of police. He was released on a $2,000 secured bond after a court appearance earlier this week.
Chief Norman Shiflett said officer David Fogle encountered Rodriguez after observing a silver Toyota car drive off an 8- to 10-foot embankment at the south end of the Stonewall Jackson Restaurant parking lot at around 2 a.m.
The chase began when Fogle drove his car to the top of the embankment and Rodriguez turned the Toyota around and drove back up the embankment toward Fogle, Shiflett said.
The fleeing car then spun around and drove through grass onto Commerce Avenue, Shiflett said. Fogle chased the Toyota until it stopped at a traffic light at the intersection of Commerce Avenue and North Royal Avenue, Shiflett said.
Fogle left his squad car to approach Rodriguez's car, but the Toyota drove off and turned left onto North Royal Avenue after the light turned green, Shiflett said.
The chase ended at Virginia Avenue where Fogle and two other officers who had joined the pursuit boxed in Rodriguez, Shiflett said.
Detective Crystal Cline said Tuesday the chase did not involve high speeds.
"I know that it was not over the speed limit," Cline said.
She identified the other two officers involved in the chase as Eric Suess and Tyler Smith.
In a news release issued Tuesday, Shiflett praised Fogle "for being in the right place at the right time to prevent someone from being seriously injured."
