Land conservation across the state received a financial boost of more than $1.23 million.

The Virginia Land Conservation Foundation Board recently approved the distribution of grants to 52 nonprofit organizations, state agencies and local governments that hold easements across the commonwealth.

Holders of easements in the Northern Shenandoah Valley received more than $47,400 from the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation Stewardship Fund in the following amounts:

The Virginia Outdoors Foundation received $819,226 from 354 easement donations statewide.

Funds come from a fee imposed on any transfer of land preservation tax credits. The fee is 2 percent of the value of the donation. Recipients use the money to monitor and enforce the conservation terms in the easements they hold.

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation staffs the foundation. The governor, the Senate Committee on Privileges and the Speak of the House of Delegates appoint the 19 members of the foundation's board.
