Police seek suspect who seriously injured elderly man
By Ryan Cornell
Winchester police are searching for suspect who hit an 82-year-old man several times with a shovel on Thurdsay night.
The victim was outside of his residence in the 200 block of Kern Street at around 10 p.m. when he was attacked, according to Lauren Cummings, spokesperson for the Winchester Police Department.
The call that came into the department described the incident as a strong-arm robbery, but she said it was changed to a malicious wounding charge because nothing was taken from the victim.
She said the suspect's motive wouldn't be released until the case is presented in court.
"The suspect is described as a black male wearing brown pants and a dark hooded sweatshirt, or a hoodie as it's often called," Cummings said. "And that's really the only description that we have of the suspect."
She said the victim "sustained serious injuries" and was taken to Winchester Medical Center for treatment. The identity of the victim was not released.
The incident is under investigation by the Winchester Police Department. Anyone with information is asked to call the Crime Solvers Hotline at 540-665-TIPS. Information leading to an arrest in this case could be eligible for a reward.
