AT&T launches 4G LTE service in Winchester

By Ryan Cornell

AT&T Inc. announced on Wednesday that it has launched the 4G LTE (long term evolution) network in Winchester.

According to a video on the company's website, 4G LTE creates lower latency and faster processing times for its 4G LTE-enabled smartphones, tablets, laptop cards and mobile hotspots. The new network is up to 10 times faster than 3G and four times faster than 4G, which was previously used in Winchester.

A spokeswoman for AT&T, Elyssa Rae, said the faster speeds will result in a noticeable difference for users as well as fewer dropped calls.

"4G LTE lets you do more of the things you love, only faster," she said. "Upload a photo in six seconds. Download a song in four seconds."

She said the company installed new equipment and antennas to add the network.

In addition to Winchester, AT&T's 4G LTE network currently covers Charlottesville, Culpeper, Norfolk, Petersburg, Richmond, Roanoke and Virginia Beach.

Verizon Wireless brought its 4G LTE network to Winchester in July 2012.
