WOODSTOCK -- Players on a Shenandoah County school football team spanked and assaulted a student in a hazing incident last month, court papers show.

Now the team's coach, Nicholas Robert Greco, stands charged with crimes related to the hazing. The Shenandoah County Sheriff's Office arrested Greco, 34, of 107 Black Oak Drive, Maurertown, on Thursday and charged him with an Oct. 31 hazing that resulted in bodily harm, assault and battery by a mob and seven counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Greco remains free on a $12,000 secured bond pending a Dec. 5 appearance in Shenandoah County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.

Capt. Wes Dellinger provided information on the case and indicated that the alleged victim, a 13-year-old boy, sustained minor cuts and bruises as a result of the hazing incident. Dellinger did not identify the boy or any other juveniles involved, citing their age. Greco is currently the only person charged in the incident.

Superintendent Jeremy Raley said Monday that Greco remains on administrative leave with pay pending an investigation by school officials.

A criminal complaint filed in the court with the arrest warrants for Greco give more details about the case and indicates that several students, allegedly under the coach's guidance, assaulted more than one person on at least two occasions. Copies of the documents provided by the court had the names of juveniles redacted.

Sheriff's Deputy V.A. Green stated in the complaint that he received information from the Peter Muehlenberg Middle School Principal Gina Stetter on Nov. 13 about an incident involving a county school employee and students at the middle school and Central High School. The teacher involved is Greco, a teacher at the middle school and the coach of the junior varsity football team, the complaint states.

"Several kids from Peter Muehlenberg stated Greco issued a hazing treatment of two students," the complaint states. "[Redacted] was the first student hazed due to falling asleep in Greco's class. Students stated several team members held [redacted] down and smacked his buttock with the coach present."

The deputy notes that a second student, name also redacted, was involved. Students stated that the second victim was accused "by Greco of falling asleep in his class so Greco instructed two members of the team who were in the same class to tell the team to haze [redacted] after school.

"[Redacted] and several students stated [redacted] was returning from getting something to eat and several team members caught him at KFC and assaulted him leaving bruises and a cut on the back of his leg," the complaint states. "[Redacted] and several students stated the team members dragged [redacted] from KFC to Centrals locker room. [Redacted] and several student[s] stated when in the locker they made [redacted] get into a locker."
