A Shenandoah County teacher is on administrative leave after authorities charged him with a student's hazing last week.

Authorities have charged Nicholas Robert Greco, 34, of 107 Black Oak Drive, Maurertown, with one count of hazing that resulted in bodily injury, assault and battery by a mob, and seven counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Investigators with the Shenandoah County Sheriff's Office responded to a hazing incident reported to a school resource officer that involved several students on Oct 31, Capt. Wes Dellinger said Monday.

A 13-year-old boy sustained cuts and bruises in the incident but did not go to the hospital, Dellinger said. Authorities are not releasing details on what the alleged hazing involved or what the victim did during the incident.

Superintendent Jeremy J. Raley said Monday afternoon that Greco, a middle school teacher also involved with the system's athletics program, remains on administrative leave with pay. School officials also are looking into the allegations.

"We take the safety and well-being of our students very seriously and this teacher is on administrative leave with pay pending the results of our investigation," Raley said.

The superintendent wouldn't comment on whether the school system has received other reports of hazing in the past.

"This is a personnel matter and the fact that there's an investigation by law enforcement and we're investigating it ourselves, I can't provide you with any details beyond that at this time," Raley said.

Dellinger released some information about the alleged incident.

"An investigation was conducted and it was learned that an assault had taken place that resulted in minor injuries," Dellinger said. "There were several witnesses involved in the incident."

Authorities are not releasing details about the hazing or the reason behind the incident at this time, Dellinger said.

"It did involve school children and the incident originally occurred outside of the school environment, but led back to the school," Dellinger added. "The [victim] was led back to the school."

Dellinger would say only that the victim attends one of the three schools at the central campus. Dellinger would not identify the victim's school.

Greco is a middle-school teacher for the county system, Raley said. Greco also is the assistant athletic director for spring sports at Central High School, according to the school's website.

"They were connected to a sports team," Dellinger said.

Greco is scheduled to appear in Shenandoah County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court on Dec. 5. Greco was granted release on a $12,000 secured bond.

Authorities have not yet charged anyone else in the case, Dellinger said.

"The other parties involved in this were juveniles, so we just can't release any additional information at this time," Dellinger said. "Other people were involved in the incident."

There were no other victims reported in this incident.
