$30K in grants given to school programs

By Ryan Cornell

FRONT ROYAL -- Seven grants totaling $34,266 were awarded to Warren County Public Schools from the Warren County Educational Endowment at a school board meeting on Thursday.

Presenting a large novelty check to Superintendent Pam McInnis and Board Chairman Catherine Bower, County Administrator and Endowment President Doug Stanley said the money will fund a variety of high level programs.

"The Warren County Public School System had to make some difficult decisions in dealing with budget issues in recent years and needs our support more than ever," he said. "With these seven grant awards, we feel that we have been able to provide a spark to creative thinking and continue to encourage the expanded use of technology as a tool for advanced learning."

The grants were awarded for these seven projects:

  • $9,766 to teach electricity and engineering students at Blue Ridge Technical Center how to create and apply renewable energy concepts through building solar, wind and fuel cell systems that can charge portable handheld devices.

  • $7,500 for three 3D printers at Warren County High School, Skyline High School and the Blue Ridge Technical Center, which will be used by students to design prototype projects as part of Project Lead the Way engineering classes.

  • $7,500 to equip the third class in the Biomedical Science program at Blue Ridge Technical Center based on Project Lead the Way standards. The course teaches students how to maintain overall health and homeostasis in the body, including how to prevent and fight infection; screen and evaluate the code in human DNA; prevent, diagnose and treat cancer and how to prevail when the organs of the body begin to fail.

  • $5,000 for four multipurpose welding machines and the necessary accessories to expand the welding curriculum at Blue Ridge Technical Center.

  • $2,500 for a classroom set of 25 ukuleles at Ressie Jeffries Elementary, which will be used to teach fifth grade students how to play three-chord ukulele songs and accompany singing.

  • $1,500 for a computer-based, diagnostic program that would screen and monitor student progress, identify specific deficiencies and provide early intervention for struggling Algebra 1 students at Warren County High School.

  • $500 for books in classroom libraries at Warren County Middle School.

These seven grants are the latest of 91 total grants, amounting to $295,954, that the endowment has awarded. To support the endowment, visit wceducationalendowment.org.
