Benefit concert to support Lighthouse Grocery

By Ryan Cornell

A concert scheduled for March will benefit the Lighthouse Grocery food pantry in Woodstock.

Featuring music from Mountain Melody and Soul Purpose, the concert will be held at Antioch Church of the Brethren, 23502 Senedo Road, Woodstock, from 2 to 4 p.m. March 22.

Dennis and Kathy Scott, who have been organizing the benefit concert, said Antioch church pastor George Bowers has been "on board" with the idea since the beginning. They've also talked to Lighthouse Grocery founder Roy Marshall, who they said is excited.

Dennis Scott plays the guitar and sings as a member of Mountain Melody. He described the group as a blend of old-time gospel and old-time country.

He said his group, led by Wayne Racey, has previously performed with the contemporary Christian group Soul Purpose and said Mountain Melody plays at an assisted living community in Woodstock each week.

"We're very much into playing free music for benefits," he said. "It was an easy twist of the arm."

He said there won't be a sermon offered at the concert, but there will be a brief introduction to the Lighthouse Grocery between the two acts. He added that the concert will be free and will accept donations to support the food pantry.

Kathy Scott said they had originally planned to use the concert to benefit multiple area food banks, but decided to support the Lighthouse when she realized how much they needed it.

"This food bank, there's a need, they had a few loaves of bread and some cans," she said.

Kim Price, bookkeeper at Lighthouse Grocery, said their food supply is always low and said the need is greater than most people think.

"Nobody comes to us that we turn away," she said. "As far as homeless goes, there's no shelter for homeless men in the county. Our mission is to be able to get funds and help those people get back on their feet and not judge them."

She said people also can give donations to the pantry in a box located at the top of the stairs by 109 N. Main St. in Woodstock or make checks payable to "The Lighthouse Grocery" and addressed to that location.
