Birthday girl raises 140 pounds of food for CCAP

By Ryan Cornell

For one girl in Front Royal, a birthday is just another opportunity to help others less fortunate.

Hayden Tyler, a second grader at Leslie Fox Keyser Elementary School, celebrated her eighth birthday on Dec. 6. Instead of asking her friends and family for toys, music or any other presents a girl her age could want, she told them to bring food that she could donate to the Congregational Community Action Project.

The guests at her birthday party delivered and Hayden ended up collecting about 140 pounds of food to give to the local organization.

Her elementary school teacher, Jacque DeCristofaro, said she was surprised when she learned of the food drive through Hayden's mother, but the student's recent act of altruism is hardly shocking.

"She's very polite, well mannered, a straight A student," DeCristofaro said. "Every teacher's dream."

She said Hayden has already decided to ask for toys for her birthday next December and plans to donate them to Toys for Tots.

The CCAP organization serves people in Warren County by providing food, clothing and limited financial support. For more information, call 540-636-2448 or visit facebook.com/frontroyalccap.
