Chocolate shop opens in Front Royal

By Ryan Cornell

FRONT ROYAL -- A new shop in Downtown Front Royal is booking flights to the land of chocolate.

Shenandoah Confections, which opened in the front of the Main Street Travel building on Friday, offers chocolate-covered Oreos, chocolate nut cups, blocks of solid fudge and fudge bars in different flavors such as banana, lemon lime, pistachio, apple and tiramisu.

Store owner Sheron Smith said the two businesses feed off of each other.

"People coming for sweets see the travel displays and the people going in for a travel agency see the teas and the chocolate," she said. "It's definitely nice to look at."

The cocoa goodness is made by Chocolate Moonshine, a Pennsylvania-based chocolatier, and is shipped down to the Front Royal sweets shop.

Smith works at the shop with her daughter, Danielle Dombrowski, and store manager, Micquila Medellin.

After having tried some of the store's many varieties of fudge bars, Medellin said her favorite is apple.

"It's the perfect balance of tart and the dark chocolate complements it well," she said. "It's not too sweet, but very well balanced."

She said the chocolates are all natural with no artificial colors, contain 50 percent less sugar than typical chocolates and are gluten-free.

Shenandoah Confections also sells an assortment of loose leaf teas and can provide sweets for weddings and other special events.
