Congregations continue to discuss homeless program

By Ryan Cornell

Shenandoah County is one step closer to implementing Family Promise's Interfaith Hospitality Network.

The program is used across the U.S. to provide shelter and meals for homeless children and their families through a network of local congregations.

Religious leaders and county residents met in Woodstock last week to further discuss the Interfaith Hospitality Network. This was the second meeting held regarding the program.

Antioch Church of the Brethren pastor George Bowers, who has been instrumental in organizing the meetings, said about 120 people attended the Dec. 3 meeting, which he described as a "fantastic turnout."

"Claas Ehlers [a representative from Family Promise] was there and shared a little bit more about the program," Bowers said. "Some pastors spoke to some concerns raised at the last meeting."

The next meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Jan. 7 at Shenandoah Community Fellowship, 197 Patmos Road, Woodstock. Bowers said the meeting will focus on implementing the program's organizational structure.

"We've had some discussions," he said. "There's a need for it in the county."

Any Shenandoah County congregations that are interested in serving as a host site or helping out are asked to contact Bowers at 540-459-3661 or gabowers@shentel.net.
