A daylong confrontation between an estimated 40 law enforcement officials and a lone gunman on Ridge Hollow Road south of Edinburg ended peacefully with the suspect's surrender late Saturday afternoon.

Roland Burgess Lindhurst, 28, of 1084 Patmos Road, Woodstock, is facing charges of brandishing a gun and reckless handling of a gun. He is being held without bond in the Shenandoah County jail and is scheduled to appear at 9 a.m. Tuesday in general district court for a bail hearing.

Shenandoah County Maj. Scott Proctor said deputies arrived in the 300 block of Ridge Hollow Road after hearing a report at about 9:15 a.m. of a man who had been drinking in need of medical care.

Proctor said the man's family reported that he had a gun and left their residence "for their own safety."

While family members were speaking to the deputies outside the home, Lindhurst fired 20 to 25 rounds from inside, Proctor said. Deputies called for reinforcements from the Virginia State Police, New Market Police Department and Woodstock Police Department, Proctor said.

"It was inclement weather there that day," Proctor said. "We had to use a lot of resources just for that reason alone."

Law enforcement officials tried without success to communicate with Lindhurst over the next several hours until he surrendered at about 4 p.m. without incident, Proctor said.

Proctor said guards took Lindhurst to Shenandoah Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released later in the day. Lindhurst had cuts to his head at the time he was taken into custody, Proctor said.

Proctor said alcohol was a factor in the incident. Law enforcement officials seized a semi-automatic rifle afterward, and the investigation is continuing, Proctor said.
