Jessika Smith, 24, has been charged with one count of felony child abuse after police discovered the body of her 2-year-old daughter on Saturday at their home on Valley Avenue in Winchester, according to a news release from the Winchester Police Department.
Authorities were called to Smith's residence just after 9 a.m. Saturday. There they discovered the body of Amber Lynn Sampson. An autopsy shows the child had head trauma, according to the news release.
The release states that "an investigation revealed that the child's mother, Jessika Smith, pushed the child causing her to fall. The child was placed in bed and the next morning was found unresponsive."
According to Police Community Relations/Crime Prevention Specialist Lauren Cummings, a resident within the home called authorities.
"A mother, father, the child, and a 7-month-old child lived in the residence," Cummings said.
The case is under investigation and the new release notes that "other charges are likely."
Smith is being held without bond.
