Seven injured in two-vehicle collision

Daily staff report

A two-vehicle collision Sunday evening in southern Shenandoah County sent seven injured people to three hospitals.

Sgt. F.L. (Les) Tyler of the Virginia State Police said a 1996 Toyota pickup truck driven by Joseph Paul Emrich, Jr. 26, of New Market was traveling on Flat Rock Road at 5:45 p.m. when it failed to stop for a stop sign and pulled into the intersection with Va. 42.

The pickup struck a northbound 2004 Chevrolet Impala driven by Brian Eugene Mauck, 56, of Woodstock, Tyler said. Four other occupants in the car - a 22-year-old man, a 17-year-old girl, 20-year-old woman and 44-year-old woman were taken to Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, Tyler said.

Emrich and a passenger in his truck, Javier Mendez, 23, of New Market were taken to Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Tyler said. Mendez was later taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Tyler said.

Tyler said trooper C.D. White investigated the crash and charged with Emrich with drunk driving.

Other public safety agencies that assisted at the scene included the Shenandoah County Sheriff's Office and local and fire rescue companies.
