Schools are closed Monday due to weather

[Updated at 6:20 p.m.] As predicted, snow fell and covered the ground in the Northern Virginia Valley on Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service, the snow, which is this area's first significant snowfall this season-- is expected to change to freezing rain and sleet, which will continue until 1 p.m. Monday.

As a result of the inclement weather, public schools in the city of Winchester, and Frederick, Warren and Shenandoah counties will be closed Monday. The high Monday will be around 44.

A winter storm warning is in effect for the region through 10 a.m. Monday.

Temperatures will be in the low to mid-20s today.

The Virginia Department of Transportation reports numerous incidents on the state's highways, and moderate conditions - snow and ice -- on some areas of Interstate 81 and ramps in Shenandoah and Frederick counties, and on some areas of Interstate 66 in Warren County.
